This ‘Royal Fashion Friday’ we’re looking at this stunning dress that was once worn by Queen Victoria. Made in 1843, this silk satin dress is an unusual survival from Queen Victoria’s wardrobe as it doesn’t have any recognised links to a specific day or event in the Queen’s life. This dress has always been one of my favourite items worn by Queen Victoria due to the elegance of the 1840s bell-shape skirt, along with the intricate floral embroidery, which has been decorated with silver thread. The lace bertha that we can see on the dress today isn’t the original but still dates back to the 1840s. Today the dress is in the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection at Hampton Court Palace and occasionally goes on display at Queen Victoria’s childhood home, Kensington Palace.
