Sketch by Queen Victoria finger eldest son, Prince Albert Edward, dated 15th October 1843. While this sketch isn’t mentioned in Queen Victoria’s journal, we do know that it was completed in a poignant anniversary in the Queen’s life as it marked four years since she proposed to her beloved husband, Prince Albert. In her journal she writes ‘it is today 4 years ago that we first “plighted our troth” , & that I ventured to entreat my dearest Albert, to be my husband, my guardian, my protector. With deep thankfulness & tender love we wished one another joy of this memorable day. May God protect & guard us as he has hitherto done!’ (1)
By this time in their lives Victoria had given birth to the couple’s third child, Princess Alice, and was soon to become pregnant with her fourth. Victoria’s relationship with her eldest son, Albert Edward, had always been strained but sketches like this show us the intimate side of Victoria’s relationship with her children.
