Mary Elizabeth Lucy’s final glimpse of Queen Victoria

A life-long fan of Queen Victoria, Mary Elizabeth Lucy got one final glimpse of the monarch in February 1872, when she witnessed the Thanksgiving parade that was held to celebrate the Prince of Wales’s recovery from typhoid. Like many well connected people, Mary Elizabeth was invited to watch the procession from a window in Oxford Street. In her memoires she writes ‘[I] never was more delighted in my life, for it was a glorious sight… [At] about three o’clock the shouts of welcome and waving of handkerchiefs indicated the approach of the Royal procession’. Like everyone present, Mary Elizabeth marvelled as the royal carriage slowly passed her by. ‘My heart throb’d with emotion at the sight of the multitude praying their glad and heartfelt message to their Queen and her son’.
