Today (25th April) marks the birthday of Queen Victoria’s third child, Princess Alice. In this endearing illustration by Queen Victoria, Alice can be seen wearing a green dress, black coat and a large bonnet. This sketch was made on 14th April 1846, just eleven days before her third birthday (25th April). Alice was perhaps the sweetest of the Queen’s nine children and was doted in by her parents. In her journal dated 7th April 1846, Queen Victoria wrote that ‘Alice lunched with us & was as tidy & neat about her eating, as any grown up person, without any one from the nursery watching her.’ (1)
