Today (21st April 2026) marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
As part of their commemorative post on instagram, the Royal Family shared this lovely photo of Princess (later Queen) Elizabeth standing beside a painting of Queen Victoria’s seventh child, Prince Leopold, on October 1842.

The portrait of Prince Leopold was created in 1853 by German artist, Franz Xaver Winterhalter, who had been commissioned by Queen Victoria. The Prince can be seen wearing the historic Honiton lace christening gown, which was worn by all of Queen Victoria’s children and each subsequent monarch, including Queen Elizabeth II in May 1926. The painting was completed in July 1853, a month after Leopold was christened.
The iconic christening gown can be seen on public display for the first time in the Royal Collection Trust’s newest exhibition ‘Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style’ at the King’s Gallery in London
