Watercolour by Queen Victoria of her first grandchild, Prince Wilhelm of Prussia during a trip to Coburg in September and October 1860. The Prince was born in Berlin in January 1859 and was the son of Prince Friedrich and Princess Victoria of Prussia. He can be seen wearing dress, which has been decorated with a large bow.
Due to the distance Queen Victoria didn’t meet Wilhelm until autumn 1860, when she and Albert travelled to Coburg following the death of Albert’s step-mother. Soon after their arrival on 25th September the couple were introduced to their grandson for the first time. In her journal the Queen writes “our darling grandchild was brought in, such a little dear. He came in walking, holding hi[s] nurse Mrs Hobbs’s hand & was very good. He is a fine fat child, with a beautiful white soft skin. We felt so happy to see him at last.” (1)
