This Sketchbook Saturday we’re looking at this stunning watercolour landscape by Queen Victoria, titled ‘View from the new approach, Balmoral’. On 27th September 1854 Queen Victoria described in her journal how it had been a ‘beautiful day, with a very hot sun. — Albert out stalking, starting early. — I walked with Vicky to the village & gave presents to some of the people, then went back to the new approach, to sketch’ (1). The following day she notes that she ‘went & finished the sketch I had began yesterday’ (2).
