This Sketchbook Saturday we’re looking at this incredible landscape watercolour by Queen Victoria, titled ‘showing a view from the River Toce, Italy’. The Queen stayed at the Villa Clara on the shores of Lake Maggiore between the 28th March and 23rd April 1879. On 5th April she wrote in her journal that ‘At 4 drove out with Beatrice & Ethel C. to Gravellona. Turned up a rough road, close by the river Toce. Here we stopped for nearly an hour, while I sketched the glorious view towards the Simplon. The after glow on the Alps, as we came back was quite beautiful.’
