On 25th December 1842, Queen Victoria wrote in her journal that she and Albert had attempted to go for a walk with members of their household ‘but were hurriedly driven in by rain. — Went upstairs to the Nursery, where the Baby [Prince Albert Edward] walked twice across the room to his dear Papa, who held his arms out to encourage him, “Pussy” [Princess Victoria] come down with me, & was quite enchanted with a large black cat a sort of Persian cat, with long, silky hair.’ (1) The following day she mentions that she had ‘breakfast before 9, then read & wrote, & went up to the Nursery. — “Pussy” was at our luncheon, & so happy with the really beautiful black cat, we had bought for her; it is so tame, that it will eat out of her hand, & lets itself be caught & played well, being very gentle & good.’ (2)
