“Another year begun, – I am feeling so weak & unwell, that I enter upon it sadly. – The same sort of night as I have been having lately, but I did get rather more sleep & was up earlier. A very dark foggy morning. – Lenchen & Beatrice came & wished me a happy New Year, as did also Thora, the others I saw later. – Heaps of telegrams, letters & cards, which Lenchen & Beatrice kindly answered for me. – In the afternoon I drove with Arthur & Thora, & we went down to the Soldiers Home, where there are some convalescents from S. Africa. I said a few words to them, thanking them for their services & wishing them a happy New Year. Then we drove on to Whippingham & called on Mr Clement Smith, who came out to the carriage & spoke to us. Rested where I came home. – Have been able to take a little more food the last 3 days. – After my supper, Ismay S. came & read to me, & then I dictated a little to Thora. -“
