“This once so very bright festive day returns sadly vow, the shadow of such deep sorrows hanging like a cloud over it. — Again a bright frosty morning. — Helen & Lorne at breakfast, Louise coming later. — Very busy again with cards. — Out with Louise. — All at luncheon. — After it, gave my presents to my maids & personal attendants, & then took an hour’s drive with Jane C. & Fanny D. Fine with a lovely sunset. — Tea with my 3 daughters, then they gave the Ladies & Gentlemen their tree & presents, after which we had ours in the Durbar Room, like last year. I got a great number of lovely things, amongst them from Alix a gold chain bracelet, with a beautiful miniature of dear Mary Teck in the centre sat round with pearls, which is a great pleasure to me. All the dear children worked or painted me something. Georgie & May gave me iron lanterns for the porch at Balmoral, Nicky & Alix a beautiful Icon which I shall place in the Chapel, &c &c. — The Ladies & Gentlemen came in to see our presents. — Jane C., Marie M. & her husband, Sir J. Mc Neill & Col: Clerk dined. —“
