Queen Victoria’s journal: The birth of Princess Charlotte of Prussia, 24th July 1860

On 24th July 1860, Princess Charlotte of Prussia, daughter of Princess Victoria and granddaughter of Queen Victoria, was born at New Palace, Potsdam, Kingdom of Prussia.

“Fine morning, but very showery later. — Soon after we sat down to breakfast, got a telegram from Fritz, to say that dear Vicky had had a daughter at 8.10 & that both were well. What joy! Mama so delighted to be still here. Am so thankful & relieved. — Out walking & drove Ly Augusta in the little Sardinian pony carriage. — Dear Mama left, to our regret, at 2. — Many telegrams of congratulations arriving, &c. — We rode with Alice & Col: Hardinge. — Excellent accounts of dear Vicky & the Baby, both so well thank God! — We dined alone with Alice. —“
