Queen Victoria’s journal:
“Very fine hot day. — Breakfasted alone with Louis. — Out with Evelyn Moore, who walked beside my pony chair. Went to the Mausoleum, & walked afterwards to Frogmore House, where we sat under a tree for a little while. — Resting & writing. — Victoria & Ludwig were there for luncheon, & I pressed them to stay till the 19th, which they said they would, Ludwig sending for his clothes, & Ella would be able to lend hers to Victoria — Afterwards, saw Sir H. Ponsonby, whom I sent up to see the Ministers about the Egyptian affairs, & to tell them, that I could not agree to their binding this country to evacuate Egypt in a given time, 5 years. That I felt most strongly, it would be a fatal step, as I knew from experience what the danger & inconvenience was, to be bound in this manner. Their answer is, that they are much troubled, but do not see their way to act differently, owing to the money question being so very urgent. The Egyptians would otherwise become bankrupt. — Beatrice & Ella returned from Eastwell, Beatrice was delighted with her visit, thought the house so comfortable & the Park beautiful. The Baby was a splendid child, & Marie looking very well. The Christening took place in the Drawingroom, the Baby receiving the names of Beatrice Leopoldine, Victoria. — Louis, Ella, Ludwig & Victoria (he had not yet got his clothes, & appeared in morning dress), the Dss of Atholl, J. Ely & Baron Rabenau dined. The latter, has come over to buy horses for Louis. —”
